David Steen recalls: “We all know the photograph of England captain Bobby Moore, victorious, holding the World Cup high, hoisted on the shoulders of team mates Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters and Ray Wilson. Today his tribute statue (created by sculptor Philip Jackson from photographs of that victory scene at Wembley Stadium after England beat West Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final), stands outside the gates of West Ham’s Upton Park ground, unveiled in 2003, 10 years after his death from cancer, by the Duke of York, president of the FA.
To meet up with football icon Bobby, wearing a dressing gown and barefoot in his sitting room at home in Barkingside, Essex, said, and still says to me a lot about the lovable family man.”

Biography: Even without all the trophies he earned, Moore would still be remembered as one of the greatest defenders ever to have lived. As it was, he won just about every piece of silverware available to a football player including the FA Cup in 1964, the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965, both with his beloved club West Ham. But it was as captain of England that Moore is best remembered. On 30th July 1966, playing against West Germany at Wembley Stadium, he captained the only England side ever to win the World Cup. He cemented his reputation as a gentleman when, just before collecting the trophy from the Queen, he wiped his muddy hands on his shorts so as not to ruin her white gloves. It was typical of Moore who personified quiet dignity, hard work and fair play.
Never the most flamboyant player, it was his reading of the game and his unsurpassed timing in the tackle that marked him out as one of the all-time greats. Even the great Pele described him as ‘the greatest defender I ever played against’. Born in 1941, he died from cancer in 1993.
