David Steen recalls: “This was taken in his shops in Covent Garden, London. I find it hard to imagine that anyone would actually buy those shoes to wear; the soles are works of art.”
Location: London, England
Year: 1995
Biography: British clothes designer born in Nottingham, Smith entered the fashion industry after his father made him take a job as an errand boy in a clothing warehouse. For many years he dreamed of being a professional cyclist, until an injury forced him to take his job more seriously. Through friendships with local art students, he began window dressing before managing a friend’s clothes shop, and then opening one of his own. After a while he decided to study fashion design and he is now one of the world’s more respected – as well as commercially successful – clothes designers; he describes his style as ‘classic with a twist’. Smith now has 12 collections (including clothes, shoes, fragrance and furniture) with shops all over the world. A design enthusiast, he was one of the first to stock the FiloFax and the Dyson vacuum cleaner
