David Steen recalls: “I was a fan of Robert Mitchum. When I arrived to photograph him at the rented flat in London, he was playing his guitar. Then we went outside and he posed with his new car, an Aston Martin. Back inside the flat, and for no reason I recall, I said, ‘Any chance of doing a shot of you in bed?’ He couldn’t have been more obliging. We went into the bedroom and he took off his trousers and shirt and got into bed.  I actually have pictures on the contact sheet of him getting undressed. What I like about this shot is the piece of cord hanging from the ceiling behind the bed to turn the overhead light on and off – a sign of the times.”
